WAT KHAO DIN (1)

Wat Khao Din, or the Monastery of the Mount of Earth, was located off the city island in the eastern area of Ayutthaya, in the Phai Ling Sub-district.

The monastery was situated on the east bank of Khlong Kudi Dao (1), just opposite Wat Samana Kottharam. Wat Kuek stood on its south.

Its historical background and period of construction are unknown.

The monastery is shown on a 1974 and 1993 CE Fine Arts Department (FAD), but the 2007 CE FAD GIS map does not indicate it.

No visible traces remain of this monastery at ground level.

The site must have been in geographical coordinates: 14° 21' 39.11" N, 100° 35' 31.56" E.

Footnotes:

(1) Khlong Kudi Dao was an artificial short-cut canal running north-south and dug in a loop of the Pa Sak River, which riverbed later became Khlong Hantra. The canal is defunct today, but some small stretches can still be seen parallel with Road No 3058. The canal was an extension of Khlong Ayothya.
