WAT SI LIAM (2)

Wat Si Liam, or the Square Monastery, is located off the city island in the eastern area of Ayutthaya, in the Phai Ling Sub-district. The temple is east of Chedi Wat Sam Plum along Rojana Rd (No 309), leading north to the Asian Highway and east to Ayutthaya.

Wat Nang Kham (restored ruin) stood north, opposite Khlong Kramang, Wat Thung Yi (defunct) east, Wat Khok Phra Non (mound) south and Wat Kuti Hak (defunct) west.

Only a restored chedi in Sri Lankan style remains of the former temple. The chedi sits on a square terrace. The base of the bell-shaped chedi is twelve-redented, while the drum has three concentric rings representing the three worlds or the Trai Phum. The three worlds are the sensual worlds, the form world, and the formless world, together forming the Buddhist cosmology. Only two rings are visible, although remnants from the third ring can be seen. The harmika was missing and replaced during restoration by a cylindrical stub on top of the dome. As there is no harmika, there is also no spire.

A monastic building (a prayer or ordination hall) stood east but disappeared with time, probably a victim of brick collecting in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Historical data about the monastery and its establishment are unknown.

The site is in geographical coordinates: 14° 21' 14.08" N, 100° 35' 39.17" E.
