Wat Yak, or the Monastery of the Yaksha (1), is located off the city island in the eastern area of Ayutthaya in Phai Ling Sub-district. Wat Dusit (ruin) and Wat Rerai (defunct) stood north, Wat Maklam (restored ruin) east, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon south and Wat Khanun (defunct) west.
Only a bell-shaped chedi remains, of which the dome is seriously damaged. In the drum is a large hole made by looters searching for relics in the relic chamber. The chedi stood in an old rusty warehouse, which had been taken down in early 2024 CE. A monastic building must have stood on its east side.
The remnants of Wat Yak are in geographical coordinates: 14° 20' 57.47" N, 100° 35' 33.46" E.
Footnotes:
(1) Genii Yah, or Yakkhas - A kind of demon represented in Siamese temples as enormous and horrible, though somewhat human in form. They are not absolutely evil, for Buddha himself passed through the state of Yak whilst on his transmigrating journey towards perfection. They are often associated with the angels [Kumphan angels] but are more often represented as evil than of good disposition. [1]
